Gr\u00f3b Nieznanego \u017bo\u0142nierza \u2013 symbol po\u015bwi\u0119cenia i z\u0142o\u017cenia na o\u0142tarzu ojczyzny \u017cycia, miejsce \u017co\u0142nierskiej i spo\u0142ecznej pami\u0119ci \u2013 to wyj\u0105tkowa mogi\u0142a warszawska. O jego powstaniu i lokalizacji w \u015brodkowej arkadzie Pa\u0142acu Saskiego zadecydowa\u0142a Rada Ministr\u00f3w. Ona te\u017c podj\u0119\u0142a decyzj\u0119 o tw\u00f3rcy \u2013 zosta\u0142 nim Stanis\u0142aw Kazimierz Ostrowski. Koncepcja Ostrowskiego zosta\u0142a zaaprobowana przez Ministerstwo Spraw Wojskowych oraz Departament Kultury Ministerstwa Wyzna\u0144 Religijnych i O\u015bwiecenia Publicznego. Samo mauzoleum mia\u0142o zaj\u0105\u0107 trzy \u015brodkowe arkady.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

G\u0142\u00f3wna p\u0142yta, wykonana z szarego polskiego kamienia, kontrastowa\u0142a z lustrzan\u0105 czerni\u0105 polerowanego granitu, kt\u00f3rym wy\u0142o\u017cono pod\u0142og\u0119. Na p\u0142ycie wyryto napis \u201eTu le\u017cy \u017co\u0142nierz polski poleg\u0142y za Ojczyzn\u0119\u201d. Za p\u0142yt\u0105 umieszczono znicz, kt\u00f3rego p\u0142omie\u0144 odbija\u0142 si\u0119 w czarnej pod\u0142odze. Podstaw\u0119 czaszy stanowi\u0142y skrzyd\u0142a czarnych anio\u0142\u00f3w z r\u0119kami na piersiach. Na \u015bcianach filar\u00f3w umieszczono tablice z nazwami p\u00f3l bitewnych z lat 1914-1918 i 1918-1920. Od strony Ogrodu Saskiego \u015brodkow\u0105 arkad\u0119 zamyka\u0142a krata zwie\u0144czona or\u0142em. W arkadzie po lewej stronie znalaz\u0142 si\u0119 wizerunek krzy\u017ca orderu wojennego Virtuti Militari, po prawej \u2013 Krzy\u017ca Walecznych. Mauzoleum od cz\u0119\u015bci bocznych oddziela\u0142y granitowe s\u0142upki po\u0142\u0105czone \u017celiwnymi pr\u0119tami. \u015aciany po bokach ozdobiono panopliami. Po stronie lewej nawi\u0105zywa\u0142y one do walk powsta\u0144czych, za\u015b po prawej \u2013 do walk z czas\u00f3w niepodleg\u0142ej Polski. Na filarach od strony placu zamieszczono tablice z wizerunkiem mieczy w otoczeniu skrzyde\u0142 husarskich.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2 listopada 1925 r. w grobie spocz\u0119\u0142o cia\u0142o nieznanego z imienia i nazwiska \u017co\u0142nierza, obro\u0144cy Lwowa, kt\u00f3rego gr\u00f3b wy\u0142oniono w ramach losowania. Ostatecznego wyboru dokona\u0142a Jadwiga Zarugiewiczowa, kt\u00f3ra nigdy nie znalaz\u0142a grobu swego syna Konstantego. O godz. 13 trumna dotkn\u0119\u0142a dna grobu, a wystrza\u0142 armatni zako\u0144czy\u0142 bicie dzwon\u00f3w. Potem nast\u0105pi\u0142a minuta ciszy, po kt\u00f3rej artyleria odda\u0142a 24 honorowe salwy armatnie.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
