Po lewej stronie uchwyci\u0142 fragment gmachu Gimnazjum im. \u015bw. Jadwigi, po prawej za\u015b dwie kamieniczki si\u0119gaj\u0105ce swoimi pocz\u0105tkami XIX w. Zosta\u0142y one rozebrane pod budow\u0119 gmachu Towarzystwa Ubezpieczeniowego Riunione Adriatica di Sicurt\u00e1 ok. 1938 r. A\u017c do powstania warszawskiego nad placem dominowa\u0142a sylwetka <\/a>ko\u015bcio\u0142a \u015bw. Aleksandra, kt\u00f3ry swoje \u00f3wczesne formy architektoniczne zawdzi\u0119cza\u0142 przebudowie z lat 1886-1895, wed\u0142ug projektu J\u00f3zefa Piusa Dzieko\u0144skiego. Pierwotna \u015bwi\u0105tynia, projektu Christiana Piotra Aignera, z lat 1818-1826, za\u0142o\u017cona na planie centralnym, z dwoma portykami umieszczonymi od strony p\u00f3\u0142nocnej i po\u0142udniowej, zosta\u0142a powi\u0119kszona. Do ko\u015bcio\u0142a dostawiono dwie wie\u017ce od strony po\u0142udniowej, ponadto zwie\u0144czono go monumentaln\u0105 kopu\u0142\u0105 posadowion\u0105 na wysokim tamburze. Bezpo\u015bredni\u0105 inspiracj\u0105 dla kopu\u0142y by\u0142a ta nad bazylik\u0105 \u015bw. Piotra na Watykanie.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jedn\u0105 z przyczyn rozbudowy ko\u015bcio\u0142a by\u0142a powi\u0119kszaj\u0105ca si\u0119 liczna wiernych.
