Otwarta w 1947 r. kawiarnia Lajkonik kontynuowa\u0142a, g\u0142\u00f3wnie za spraw\u0105 bywalc\u00f3w, tradycje artystycznej kawiarni zwanej U Miki, kt\u00f3r\u0105 Karol M\u00fccke otworzy\u0142 przy placu Trzech Krzy\u017cy w 1885 r. To tam przed 1914 r. mo\u017cna by\u0142o spotka\u0107 Franca Fiszera, W\u0142adys\u0142awa Reymonta czy Edwarda S\u0142o\u0144skiego. Po wojnie przy kawiarnianych stolikach lokalu zasiadali m.in. Julian Tuwim, Antoni S\u0142onimski, Jerzy Zaruba czy Tadeusz Gronowski. Kiedy w\u0142adza okrzep\u0142a, Lajkonika przemianowano na Krakowiank\u0119, a Warszawskie Zak\u0142ady Gastronomiczne pozwoli\u0142y na ozdobienie wn\u0119trz podobiznami i karykaturami bywalc\u00f3w. Autorami tych charakterystycznych dekoracji byli Eryk Lipi\u0144ski, Tadeusz Gronowski czy Zbigniew Lengren. W ci\u0105gu jednej nocy wymalowano np. Stanis\u0142awa Lorentza, Kalin\u0119 J\u0119drusik i S\u0142onimskiego. Zaruba stworzy\u0142 ca\u0142\u0105 galeri\u0119 postaci umieszczonych na \u2013 r\u00f3wnie\u017c wymalowanym \u2013 balkonie.
